From Hobby to Heirloom: The Story Behind JS WoodWorks
I grew up with wood in my hands.
I’m John Shutlock—maker, woodturner, and lifelong admirer of lumber. In high school, I discovered the lathe—and it changed everything. I was fascinated by how a simple block of wood could be transformed into something beautiful and lasting. Even as life moved quickly, the joy of working with wood remained steady.
Today, every piece I create carries that same passion. At JS Woodworks, each bowl, platter, or vase is hand-turned from wood chosen for its natural character—whether it’s a domestic maple, a rich walnut, or an exotic species with striking grain.
My hope is simple: that whether it’s a bowl for your family table or a gift for someone you love, each piece brings you the same joy I felt while making it.
